School Social Worker

Ms. DeFosset

What is a school social worker?

A school social worker is a trained professional available to all students and parents.  The school social worker works with teachers, administrators, counselors, psychologists, nurses, speech pathologists, and other staff members to integrate information in order to assist in solving social, emotional, and academic problems.

What exactly do I do at Shepard High School?

Here is a list of responsibilities performed by the social worker:

Provide crisis intervention services.

Provide brief individual counseling.

Provide brief family counseling.

Provide group counseling.

Provide community resources to students and families.

Provide coordination of services between the school, families, and community services.

Provide social developmental studies for students receiving special education services.

Help develop Individual Education Plans for students receiving special education services.

Consult with teachers, administrators and counselors.

Oversee the Free and Reduced Lunch program.

Consult with junior highs.

Coordinate educational services for students with medical needs.

Work with the Student Support Team.

Help develop and train staff on the Crisis Management Plan.

Who can make an appointment to see me?

Any student and/or parent at Shepard High School can see the social worker.

Why would someone come see me?

People go to the social worker to get help and/or support with a difficult issue in life.  Students may go to the social worker in an effort to get help and support, beyond what they might receive from their counselor, with problems or issues that they have.  School social workers are also familiar with community resources and can link students and families to the appropriate place.

How do you make an appointment to see me?

1.      Come into the counseling office before school, during lunch, or after school and request a visit with the social worker.

2.      Fill out a request form located in the counseling office.

3.      Parent, administrator, teacher, counselor, or self referral.

Where is the social worker office?

My office is located inside the counseling office, next to the main cafeteria.
