Welcome to the Social Work Corner.  I am the social worker at Shepard and I wanted to update you on some of the programs that are going on in your school.

Special groups were held first semester to assist students in a number of areas. These groups included two groups on friendship, one group on positive social interactions, and one group for pregnant teens and teen moms.  Metropolitan Family Services has been working with me to provide a group on anger management and conflict resolution. Two therapists have been coming in once a week for five weeks to assist in providing this service.  Participants for the various groups have been identified and recommended by their teachers and administrators.  More groups will be facilitated second semester including a grief and loss group for students who have lost a member of their immediate family.

The Free and Reduced Priced Lunch Program has completed the final stage of verification.  Since this program is funded by the state of Illinois there are specific guidelines that must be followed including verifying the income of three percent of all participants.  Random selections of applications were chosen to be verified.  Any application that was chosen to be verified had to provide proof of income.  If they did not they were automatically removed from the program.

Second semester is Annual Review season.  Any student who receives Special Education services will have their yearly meeting to discuss progress and programming for next year.  Parents of these students should be receiving their invitations to these meetings within the next couple of months.  Parents are encouraged to call and reschedule the meeting time if they are unable to attend during the assigned time.

Lastly, I am in the process of putting together a website on the Shepard High School web page.  This site will include information on social work services and community resources.  Feel free to check it out once it is finished.  My web page should be located under the Student Services section of the Shepard web site.
